This and That

Just got back from 3 lovely days in a log cabin on a mountain top in West Virginia...no news , no cell phones , no computers etc...just the river, the wind, the trees, great food, great conversations with my friend. walks, music....very very nice!!!

Continuing the eat locally theme of farmers markets there is a great program at the National Arboretum called "Growing Food, Growing Together". Your family will learn how to plan, grow ,cook and even do crafts with the products of your own hands and the earth. To find out more about this great program where your whole family gets a plot of land at the arboretum to work on please go to Heather.Myers@ars.usda.gov or call her at 202 254-2709.

I just received a great book from a friend of my daughter. It is called Come and Play Children of our World Having Fun. Edited by Ayana Lowe. This book celebrates the children of the world...it celebrates art and poetry and most of all it celebrates play! Check it out!

Here's a poem I came across recently by Robert Louis Stevenson from A Child's Garden of Verses:

As from the house your mother sees
You playing round the garden trees
So you may see,if you will look
Through the windows of this book,
Another child far,far away,
And in another garden,play.
But do not think you can at all,
By knocking at the window, call
That child to hear you. He intent
Is all on his play-business bent.
He does not hear; he will not look,
Nor yet be lured out of this book.
For, long ago, the truth to say,
He has grown up and gone away,
And it is but a child of air
That lingers in the garden there.

So time to water the garden.......

Palisades Farmers Market

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday was the opening of the Palisades Farmers Market. Please check out the website at www.palisadesfarmersmarket.com
Our first day was a huge success. Right now we have 4 farmers and will be adding more as the season continues . This is a great way to buy locally and eat seasonally , support our local farmers, teach children about good nutrition and have them help you shop in a fun environment and do your part to help save the environment. So please come out and meet each other and EAT HEALTHY!!!

Nature Based Play

At the Little Red Playschool, we take a lot of field trips related to the exploration of nature. This video sums up why I believe nature is so critical to a child's early learning development.

School's Out!

I'm on vacation! I am excited to start this blog when I get back. I hope it will be a fun way for parents and kids in the Little Red Playschool to share pictures, anecdotes, stories and more.
